Earliest Memory

Okay, it's been a week since I blogged and I'm going to try something new. I love reading other people's comments so I'm going to ask a question and hope for a lot of feedback. As I am building precious memories with my little ones I often wonder when will the ones start happening that he/she will remember. Everyone seems to be different and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the things that people remember. I think one of my earliest, most vivid memories would be of my third or fourth birthday party. My older brother gave me a yellow "My Little Pony" that had apples on her little rump. I can't quite remember her name but it was a super big deal to me that this gift was especially from him to me. That cements so solidly in my mind how special and important John will be in Kailey's life. His acceptance and approval will play an important, God-given role in who she becomes.

So, what is your earliest memory and how does it (or does it) affect you today? Is it positive, negative, silly, or important? What does it mean to you? I wonder what our children's earliest memories will be. . .

My earliest is being 2 and across the street at my friend Shannon's house (also 2), being in her bedroom and trying to figure out a way to reach the light switch. We were trying to turn the light on but it was soooo high up there! We had just pushed a stool against the wall and were both reaching up to get it when her brother (who happens to be another Jack) came running in saying, "The sno-cone man is here!!" We then all ran outside to the sno-cone truck and I got a watermelon sno-cone. We lived in Arkansas at the time. We only lived there for 11 months, so maybe that's why I have some memories of that time. Lots of change, plus my sister was also born during that time. It's funny what sticks out in our minds from so long ago. And do I remember my parents bringing my sister home from the hospital?? Noooo. I remember sno-cones. :)

I love the question! It will be fun to see what our kiddos remember. Emma has such an amazing memory I will be surprised if she doesn't remember things from right now. Anyway, my first memory is a little morbid, I guess, but I was about 3. My great-grandparents lived in Abilene about 4 blocks from campus, and so every event at ACU was a family reunion. I remember we were at their house during Sing Song with a huge group of extended family. I remember that my Papa Cheatham (my great grandpa) was resting in his room & the adults kept asking the kids to be quiet so he could rest. One of the relatives went in to check on him & found that he had peacefully passed away with his entire family around him - they think he waited to see us all again before he let go. I remember seeing the men in white carrying him out on a stretcher. It made quite an impression on me! My sweet great-grandmother lived more than 20 years longer than he did, which I loved because I got the chance to know her well.
My other 1st memory is of holding my sister Holly in the hospital!

My earliest memory is of me and my brother sometime around Halloween. We had dressed up as Bert and Ernie that year - real clever, huh? My mom had people over so we thought it would be a riot if we put on our costumes and walked around. I remember standing in the little sewing closet, in costume, laughing hysterically because we thought we were the funniest kids ever.
The crazy thing is that we only celebrated Halloween a few times when I was little so I have no idea why this is one of my earliest memories.

Who else would like to see a picture of Bert and Ernie?? I think that should be Tara's next blog. :)

Earliest memory, huh? That's a tough one! When I was little, maybe 3-4, we lived in Shreveport, Louisiana. For some reason, we lived in a house right on a golf course. (I have no idea how that happened!) The fence in our back yard was a chain link fence that literally edged the path the golfers walked on. I remember there being a big swingset, and the boys selling lemonade to the golfers through the little holes in the fence. . . I particularly remember once getting hit smack on the back of my leg by a golf ball gone astray. Apparently the golfer had yelled "Fore," but I was too little to appreciate what that implied. I remember my mom coming out and carrying me inside to the house and being very, very upset at that golfer. And I remember crying a lot.

Great first memory, huh? I'm with all of you, I want to see pictures of Bert & Ernie! Much cooler first memory... ; )

I will see if I can dig up a picture somewhere - it may take a while, I'm not sure we have any of them :)

My earliest memory is pretty random. I know I had to be 2 years old, because my memory involves both of Memaw's parents, and they both passed away when I was 2.

Her parents lived just down the alley in back of her house. When Memaw kept me, we used to walk down the alley daily and visit with Grandmom and Granddad. I remember that Granddad would always take me back into a room with a big white desk, open up the far left hand drawer, and pull out some sort of candy or surprise. On this particular day, he gave me a pencil with one of those creepy troll dolls on the top of it. The troll doll had BRIGHT orange hair.

This year for valentine's, Memaw gave me a troll doll with orange hair. It's so funny the things we place great significance on in hindsight.
